During the event, DJPC will present their annual Global Justice and Peace Award to the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH), an Honduran organization founded by indigenous Lenca feminist leader and environmental defender, Berta Cáceres. Four years ago, Berta was killed because of her powerful organizing against the construction of the Agua Zarca dam project. COPINH has continued her legacy by demanding accountability and justice for Berta’s murder via the legal system and continuing to organize against the dam project.
DJPC will also recognize the work of Isa Villalon and Ruby Tedeschi, two local organizers dedicated to human rights. Long term volunteer Kathryn Rodriguez will be awarded the Circle of Peace Award.
The evening will feature music by Adolfo Romero, as well as poetry from Lu Aya of the Peace Poets and Honduran poet Melissa Cardoza.
DJPC has been advocating for justice and peace for over 40 years, promoting human rights, economic and environmental justice for the disadvantaged in Latin America.
