Join us for Awards Night 2021 on October 21st at 6:00 p.m.

Next Thursday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m, we will  celebrate our Virtual Annual Awards Night. During the event, we will present our annual Global Justice and Peace Award to Sônia Guajajara. She is known worldwide for her fierce and bold activism and for defending indigenous and environmental rights in the face of pressure from some of the most powerful sectors of Brazilian society.

Her engagement with indigenous rights started at a very young age. With only 15 years old she created the National Indian Foundation (Fundação Nacional do Índio). Guajajara is the leader and executive coordinator of the Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil), an organization that represents over 300 indigenous ethnic groups in Brazil. This organization works to achieve indigenous rights in Brazil, including the right to legal recognition of land.

We will also recognize two longtime supporters of DJPC, Richard Kruch and Natasha Kerr for their activism and commitment to social justice.

Richard Kruch, known by most of his friends as just “Kruch” former board member, peace activist since the 70s. Kruch’s has been appreciated by the DJPC community for his deep knowledge on the issues of Central America and economic globalization, his skills in networking with other activist and groups, his insight and vision, and his warmth and integrity.

Natasha Kerr has been deeply committed to numerous social and economic justice issues that create transnational solidarity with oppressed groups. As someone with immigrant ancestors from both Europe and Central America, she embraces multicultural values and believes in the self-determination of indigenous peoples throughout the Americas. She does not fall far from the apple tree- her mother was granted this same DJPC award decades ago.
