(English) Save the Date: October 12th 2019. Annual Global Justice and Peace Awards Night.

Save the Date: October 12th 2019 This year we are honoring congressman Jean Wyllys de Matos Santos.Wyllys became a leader of human rights and gay rights struggles in Brazil through an unusual path. He won the Brazilian version of Big Brother, and he turned that victory into a political statement for LGBTQ rights. In Congress, he became a nemesis to Jair Bolsonaro, the current fascist president of Brazil, and following the 2018 elections Wyllys suffered death threats. He had been close to another gay politician, Marielle Franco of the Rio de Janeiro city council, who had been assassinated earlier that year. As a result of the death threats, Wyllys resigned his position and entered exile, refusing to serve during the government of Bolsonaro. His unusual trajectory is especially important to honor with the Global Justice and Peace Award for two reasons. First, it would foreground LGBTQ rights in a time when those rights are under attack in North and South. Second, Wyllys himself represents the anti-thesis to Bolsonaro, the president of Brazil who exceeds even Trump in his racist, xenophobic, misogynist and homophobic nonsense. When: Saturday, October 12th, 2019. 6:00 pmWhere: Fellowship Hall: Highlands United Methodist Church. 3131 Osceola Street. Denver CO 80212.This is a child friendly event. Suggested donation: $20.00.
