{"id":5274,"date":"2016-09-21T12:02:09","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T18:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/denjustpeace.org\/?p=5274"},"modified":"2016-09-21T12:02:09","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T18:02:09","slug":"letter-of-concern-to-newmont-mining-corporation-chaupe-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/denjustpeace.org\/es\/2016\/09\/letter-of-concern-to-newmont-mining-corporation-chaupe-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter of Concern to Newmont Mining Corporation: Chaupe Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">September 21, 2016<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Newmont Mining Corporation<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Corporate Headquarters<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>6363 South Fiddler\u2019s Green Circle <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Greenwood Village, CO 80111<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> We have recently learned that M\u00e1xima Acu\u00f1a Chaupe, winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize, and her husband Jaime Chaupe, have been severely injured as a result of an attack by personnel at the Yanacocha mine owned by Newmont Mining Corporation. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The couple\u2019s daughter, Isidora Chaupe, has reported that dozens of individuals from the company\u2019s security forces and the police force entered their property illegally and began to damage the crop area belonging to the couple. When M\u00e1xima and Jaime demanded that they stop, they were both struck. M\u00e1xima was then beaten severely as Jaime gathered equipment in attempt to record the event. M\u00e1xima has since been hospitalized with severe injuries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This is not the first time that M\u00e1xima and her family have been terrorized by Yanacocha security forces. In fact, M\u00e1xima and her husband have had to live in constant fear as a result of harassment from these forces that includes intrusion onto the property, beatings of family members, the killing of livestock, destruction done to one of the couple\u2019s buildings, guns being fired near the property, and being followed while coming and going from their home. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Nonetheless, we are appalled by the blatant brutality of this incident and call on Newmont to take immediate action to withdraw all security forces and other personnel from the Chaupe\u2019s land and surrounding area. We also call on Newmont to provide every possible assurance to the Chaupe family that this deplorable act will not happen again.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> As this year\u2019s winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, M\u00e1xima Acu\u00f1a was recognized for her diligent and courageous efforts to protect her home and community from environmental contamination and destruction of the local water supply. Having won a landmark court case regarding ownership of the land, her only desire is to peacefully farm this land with her husband. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Every day, environmental activists risk their lives to stand up for a clean environment, and the rights of small farmers and indigenous people. In fact, Latin America has become the most dangerous place in the world for environmental activists.
