Join us as Rob Robinson, leader of the GeoTech team that has been monitoring and researching the cracked houses surrounding the Marlin Mine in Guatemala since 2005 and has researched the issues surrounding the reclamation of the mine, shares a general overview of mining issues, a history of transnational corporations repeating itself in Guatemala, the current impacts of the Marlin Mine on local people and the environment, and the legacy impacts of Guatemala’s Marlin Mine.

Rob Robinson is a mining and environmental engineer with 40 years experience in mine production and engineering, and the remediation of abandoned and historic mines.

The focus of this popular education based workshop is globalization, migration, and the economic implications of these factors.  Come and learn how people are affected by neoliberal economic policies and how we can respond.  This workshop is filled with hands-on activities and sports a companion zine with resources and more.

Jordan Garcia is the Immigrant Ally Organizing Director for Coloradans for Immigrant Rights, a project of the American Friends Service Committee.  He serves on the board of directors for the Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training and the Chinook Fund.  He believes that community organizing for systemic change can and will lead us to liberation.  Jordan has a BA in International Political Economy with an emphasis on Urban Studies from Colorado College.

On May 12, 2008, 389 undocumented workers were arrested and placed in handcuffs and chains by 900 heavily armed ICE agents at Agriprocessors, Inc., the largest kosher slaughterhouse and meat-packing plant in the country.  In just 4 days, nearly 300 of these workers were fast-tracked through the US legal system, convicted of criminal charges, and sentenced to prison.  Individuals were left humiliated, families were torn apart, and a community of great diversity was left in ruin.

“AbUSed: The Postville Raid” is a full-length documentary that tells the story of the most brutal, most expensive, and one of the largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the history of the United States.  By weaving together the personal stories of the individuals, the families, and the town directly affect by the events of May 12, 2008, the film presents the human face of the issue of immigration reform and serves as a cautionary tale against abuses of constitutional human rights.

Margie Thompson and Maria Suarez Toro, of FIRE (Feminist International Radio Endeavour), will talk about what constitutes “the shock” with the repression in Honduras following the coup d’etat in June 2009 and continuing today.  They will discuss the persecution of the popular resistance and social/political movements, and power grabs by conservative political forces and transnational corporations.

Community Consult in Huehuetenango (courtesy COPAE)

Alejandro Alfaro, a Guatemalan and former employee of COPAE (the San Marcos’ Catholic Diocese’ Pastoral Commission of Peace and Ecology) will share his experiences working with the communities in Guatemala’s Western Highlands who are opposing the chemical mining taking place in their territories. The story of their lives is a story of success, grief, and hope. He will also promote ways to support this struggle for life.

Appropriate Technology and Sustainable Development

With the following organizations in attendance:

El Porvenir assists people in rural communities in Nicaragua to improve their standard of living through sustainable development in clean water, sanitation, and health education. To date, EP has assisted rural communities with 705 projects that now supply 105,000 people with clean water and hygenic sanitation.

Friendship Bridge  is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization whose mission is to provide microcredit and education to women so that they can create their own solutions to poverty. Currently, Friendship Bridge serves 12,000 women in predominatly rural Guatemala in areas characterized by extreme poverty and high levels of illiteracy.

The Lambi Fund of Haiti  is a unique grassroots organization whose mission is to assist the popular, Democratic movement in Haiti by providing financial resources, training, and technical assistance to peasant-led community organizations.

Potters for Peace  is a network of potters, educators, technicians, supporters, and volunteers. They work with clay artisans in Central America and worldwide on ceramic water purification projects.

Water for People is an international non-governmental development organization. They work with people and partners to develop innovative and long-lasting solutions to the water, sanitation, and hygiene problems in the developing world.

Join us as we learn about the various forms of enviornmentally friendly methods and technology being used in Latin America.
